| Coastal Wetlands There are wetlands along the coastal regions of the United States that are very important to us. They boarder the states of California, Florida, Texas, and Louisiana. The number of plants and animals that survive here is very high. It is believed a very diverse group of our plants live in these areas. More than 30% of the species of plants that have been identified in the world are in the wetlands. The destruction of these natural habitats continues to be at a very high rate for construction and the development of technology. Yet we need to understand they importance of these coastal wetlands not only for plants and animals but for our own well being. This is the area of the United States where we get the ability to have clean air. With so many types of pollution in our society we need all of that we can get. Many people don’t realize it but these coastal wetlands also filter the water that makes its way too many other areas of the world. Without these two major benefits all of us would certainly suffer in a variety of ways. The costal wetlands have been under protection in the United States for the past 35 years for these very reasons. You may not realize just how big many of these coastal wetlands really are. They can expand for hundreds of miles out there. Due to the research on the land under the water in many wetland regions, it is believed some locations are more than one million years old. This means they have certainly been able to survive on their own all this time. Sadly, it is the introduction of man made materials and the desire to take over such land that threatens them. The more people realize that destroying these wetlands is also destroying their quality of life the less of it will happen though. Excellent quality of water and air is something we should all be striving for. We do a great deal of conservation in our own areas but we need to remember that some natural filters are in place for us along the coastal wetlands. If we help save these areas then we will also be saving ourselves. Wetland Plants: In the wetlands you will find a very diverse population of plants. Many of them you can’t find anywhere else. It is estimated that 30% of the plants in the world are found in the wetlands. This is why it is such a major concern that they are being destroyed. Many of these plants have adaptation capabilities but not when their environment is being so rapidly destroyed. These plants do much more than just survive in that habitat. They are able to filter the air we breathe so that it is much better than it would otherwise be. As the wetlands are destroyed the amount of carbon dioxide that stays in the air is too high for our comfort. This can result in more people having asthma and serious breathing problems. |
